Chapter six

Ipaced across the tatami floor of Kazan's- no, our room. After hearing about the incoming battle, I raced back to the room to await his return. They were still discussing whatever they needed to about the battle with Taiga for the rest of the afternoon.

Someone knocked on the door. I dove toward the bed, hiding behind it and waiting for the person to leave. Maybe it was Taiga's men already coming to kill me or use me against Kazan. I glanced at the window. Too far and too high up to jump, but I might be able to climb out and hang for a little longer until whoever was at the door left.

They knocked again. I shot up and started running for the window. They wouldn't get me. I could run. They didn't know my scent. My lips turned cold against my teeth. Why was it so cold in this house? I swung a leg over, ready to climb out.

"Miyuki?" A familiar face gasped.

I turned around to see Sakamura holding a small basket in her hands. Twice the size of one a human would carry, but it fit her stature like it was perfectly proportionate.

"What are you doing?!" She dropped the basket and ran toward me. The sudden charge threw me unbalanced and I started to tip backward.

I opened my mouth to scream but my lungs were frozen and incapable of breathing.

"No!" Sakamura screamed and grabbed me before I fell out the window.

She pulled me in for a rib-crunching hug. Small, soft sobs echoed through her body as she pulled me even closer than I thought possible. The heat in her body melted the frozen parts of my body and I tried to take a deep breath of air.

I tapped Sakamura's arm to signal for her to let go of me.

She pulled away and wiped a tear from her face. "I'm sorry... I just thought you were about to jump and kill yourself because of Lord Kazan. I couldn't bear to see you fall."

I sucked in a deep breath. My lungs still hurt from being frozen. It definitely wasn't that cold in the house. It was still summer outside.

"Sorry. I thought you were Taiga or something."

Sakamura's face paled. "You thought I was--" She covered her mouth with her hand. "Oh, Miyuki, no. Taiga won't hurt you here." She pulled me in for another hug. "Don't you ever worry about that. Lord Kazan is strong. He can protect you from him."

I wasn't sure if Sakamura was trying to comfort me or telling the truth. Either way, I accepted her words of good faith and wrapped my arms around her to devour some more of her heat.

"Why are you so cold." She pressed a hand to my forehead and shook her hand. "You're clammy too."

"It's nothing. Probably sweating when you scared me."

Sakamura clicked her tongue and shook her head. "No, it's something else. We might have to get you checked out. Either way, I brought you lunch."

My stomach growled as if steering on the idea of lunch and the change in subject.
